Most common Japanese Green Teas

Here's a good overview to get you started on the different types of green tea. These are from Japan and differ from that of Chinese green teas. Of course, don't let this bog you down if you're just wanting to start drinking green tea. All of the green teas are going to be beneficial for you! Sometimes people just like to experiment with the variations and flavors. Enjoy!

Here are the most common types of Green Tea from Japan:
  • Gyokuro highest grade and most expensive tea in Japan

  • Matcha used to only be used for special occasions. It's a ground tea and thus the whole leaf is consumed. Also used for cooking. 

  • Sencha accounts for 70% of consumption in Japan.

  • Genmaicha is actually Sencha combined with roasted popped brown rice grains. It has the lowest caffeine content if you want to reduce caffeine. 

  • Hojicha is produced similarly to Chinese green teas. It's a popular tea to drink chilled for the hot summer days.

  • Kukicha is made of stems and stalks that are normally discarded in the other teas' production.

  • New leaves are beginning to grow in after the first harvest of the Sencha. Around June - October, these subsequent sets of leaves are selected for Bancha.
