How to Perfectly Brew Green Tea

Step 1: Prepare your green tea leaves

This is a versatile tea, widely available in loose leaf, tea bag, and powder shapes. You will need to start by not only selecting your favorite type of green tea, but also the form you want to use for brewing.

If you are using green tea bags to prepare green tea, simply follow the label instructions. Use a tea strainer or tea ball to contain the leaves if you want to brew green tea with loose leaves or pearls.

We recommend that you use a separate teapot specifically for brewing green tea for the best results. This helps prevent flavor contamination from other herbal blends, although not entirely necessary, and preserves the distinct green tea flavor profile. For brewing, use glass, ceramic, clay, porcelain or stainless steel teapots — avoid plastic and aluminum as they can change flavours.

Step 2: Prepare and Heat Water

Brewing a delicious green tea cup begins with using the right water. We recommend avoiding tap water and hard water as it is treated with chemicals that can change the green tea's delicate flavor profile. Instead, to get the best flavor, use filtered or purified water.

Compounds of green tea flavor are sensitive to high water temperatures. That means you'll get a bitter, unpleasant flavor if you steep your green tea in too hot water, unlike black tea. Rather, try to steep your green tea in 175-185 F water, which is the ideal temperature range for green tea.

You can use a tea kettle with a built-in temperature gage or thermometer for the most accurate results. Alternatively, on the stovetop, you can boil water, remove it from heat, and allow the hot water to sit for the perfect cup for about 45 to 60 seconds.

You may need to let the water cool down a little longer if you're at sea level. That's because at sea level the boiling point is 212 F and at 6,600 feet only 200.1 F. Again, for precise results, you may prefer to use a thermometer; otherwise, be patient and adjust your green tea recipe to suit your situation.

Step 3: Steep

Cover your tea kettle or tea cup if you brew when steeping in a single cup. Depending on your taste preferences, allow the green tea to steep for 3 to 5 minutes. To achieve the best results, we recommend steeping for 3 minutes and then tasting every 30 seconds.

Step 4: Flavor if desired

Green tea can be eaten as-is, or for your own unique cup of green tea you can add spices and sweeteners. Lemon juice, cinnamon sticks and honey are among the most common green tea enhancers. Just allow the tea to cool to room temperature before serving with ice or further cooling in the refrigerator to make iced green tea.
